Stacy Abrams and the Fair Fight
In 2018, Stacey Abrams launched a promising bid in her run for Governor of Georgia. In this race, she was able to mobilize many voters in Georgia and ran a tight race with her opponent, now- Governor, Brian Kempt. Losing by a slim margin at 50% to 48%, she ran what could be seen as one of the best run for state governor by a Democrat in recent memory. Being that Georgia is typically a Republican leaning state, being run by a female, African American could almost be seen as impossible. Despite the loss, her run had a great impact on voters in the state of Georgia. This impact had initially led many to think that she would make a possible 2020 Presidential run. Though many would have liked to have seen this run, Stacey Abrams decided to focus on another important aspect of the political process.
Fair Fight 2020
In light of her run, voters suppression became the issue, with many claiming that she was cheated out of a fair election. Now her new aim is to combat this problem in future elections. Instead of making a run for President, as many had expected, she is taking her fight to what may prove to be an all the more concerning issue in the American political system.
Stacey Abrams has announced that she will be launching a new voters initiative, Fair Fight 2020. With this, she hopes to combat voter suppression, among many other issues voters face in the state of Georgia. In announcing this program, Abrams stated that her main goal for the Democratic Party is, “”making sure every eligible American who should cast a vote will be able to.” Although focused on Georgia, this initiative will also target certain battleground states, such as Louisiana and Kentucky. With this, the overall goals of the programs are to conduct vote-by-mail programs, educate voters about elections, educate about voting procedures, ensure that voters know about their voting rights, and to facilitate get-out-to-vote programs, with an aim to make sure more people will go cast their ballots during the early voting period, as well on election day. This initiative could prove to be an important move for the upcoming election season. With her power and influence within the Democratic Party, she could be a big game changer for any Democratic who is looking to win their election. Along with this influence, her plan to combat voter suppression issues, could also be a major player for future candidates.
