Music and Photography for the New Generation At The Bakery
On Saturday, February 2, 2019, The Bakery hosted a Photo Exhibit featuring local Photographers and DJs ranging in age from late teens to early twenties. When approaching the venue, I was greeted by a mass of people socializing outside on the patio. Once inside there was a check in table, then directly to the right was the room where all the artwork was being showcased. It was engulfed in red, coral, and rosey tones, contrasted with stark white walls and floors. (Photo of artist @dowelltrey and DJ @dylanelliott) The wall nearest to the front had the DJ booth, from which two different sets were performed: first by Emily (@girl_irl) and Diego (@deadpicasso) from 8-9 p.m., then Dylan Elliott (@dylanelliott) from 10-12 p.m. They played a mix of tunes including a wide variety of genres, from EDM to Trap to Indie Rock. The wall to the left contained portraits by Lauren Bevis. The center wall had photos, which were a collaboration between Angel Romero (@angeldromero) and Diego. Finally, the last wall to the right was composed of portraits by Arlaina (@arlainaa). All prints shown were on sale and Angel and Diego were also selling their debut photo book at the event too. All of the photos had a somewhat similar aesthetic, and corresponded together nicely. However, there were different tones and themes as well, so you could really see the heart and soul of each photographer in their work. The photos consisted of normal portraiture and more surreal portraiture as well. Due to The Bakery’s connections with members of the local record label Awful Records and their constant promotion and hard work, they had a large turnout. The energy in the room was electric throughout the event. Everyone came in dressed to kill with good vibes, and most importantly, excited to support not only their peers but the future of art in Atlanta.
