Should Fraternities Exist Anymore?
Soliciting prostitution, illegal drug use, intoxication, hazing deaths, and sexual assault…these are all problems that are associated with fraternities. The recent decades have seen the rise in the conversation about what is termed “toxic masculinity” and fraternities are often in the spotlight of this topic. Their black history of sexual violence and the ease by which it can be accepted within the fraternity has some people questioning whether or not fraternities should even exist.
Reining in the fraternities may not be justice enough for rape victims, as the entire culture within the fraternity encourages an obscene form of masculinity. The aforementioned fact has people rethinking the purpose of fraternities on campus.
Here are some disturbing facts…
Fraternity Rape Statistics
The fact that the above sentence is even a thing, makes the college campus a scary place for a woman. One article by the The Guardian arguing for the complete dismemberment of fraternities presented a study that showed how one in five women are raped on campus and that fraternities are more likely for rape up to 300% the norm related to sexual offenses.
Other disturbing trends within fraternities is the nonchalance by which rape is accepted and even perpetuate by frat brothers with a glaring example given within The Guardian article about hashtags written by college frat brothers about how to lure potential victims. Women at sororities were shown to be especially vulnerable to these kinds of behaviours.
The statistics on rape by Campus Magazine campus rape statistics confirm the 1 in 5 victim ratio with other stats showing how half of the rape victims tell no one of their experience.
Other Jarring Statistics
- 80% of sexual assault victims at campus are under 30 years old
- 44% as of 2018 of the victims are under 18
- Disabled persons have had more than twice the rate of victimization than non-disabled
- Male victims of campus rape: juvenile under 17 make up 90% of the victims of rape
- 1 in 3 sexual assaults involved intoxication
Should fraternities be banned? The statistics point to an absolute yes until the rape culture prevalent in fraternities is utterly uprooted.

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with a few pics to drive the message home a little bit, but other than that, this is fantastic blog. A great read. I will certainly be back.
