Should Fraternities be Banned?
Frat culture is one of hyper-masculinity, which can be dangerous to women when alcohol is involved. Without teaching young adults about masculinity that is respectful of the human dignity of others, then the fraternity can be a hazardous place on the college campus. The socialization of accepting sexual aggression begins in some fraternities.
Macho-man bravado, loudness, and drunkenness are some of the factors that contribute to violence on campus. In cultivating their members, both fraternities and sororities have come under scrutiny for the extreme methods that are used to induct junior members into the fold.
Hazing
Called “hazing” rituals, the methods used when testing initiates combined with alcohol have led to the deaths of hundreds of students. As many as three quarters of fraternities and sororities experience some hazing behavior most often related to alcohol.
Other hazing rituals can be darker, amounting to pure torture, with kicking, punching, and assault on member with blunt objects. Alcohol poisoning is not the only way to the grave in these organizations; the severe blood loss from varying rituals do the trick.
Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Sexual Assault
Given the college stances on alcohol and the lack of adequate reinforcement of these laws, alcohol abuse has led to the rape and death of many young adults. In fraternities which are especially notorious for “spiked” drinks with date rape drugs and alcohol is just another tool for sexual predation.
In relation to alcohol associated sexual assault, 43% of women, in the process of being victimized involved alcohol consumption, with over two-thirds of victims under the influence.
Others include about 50% of college student sexual assault cases are due to alcohol and 90% of acquaintance related rapes involve liquor. Upwards of 12.8% of rape victims were on a date with the perpetrator.
The cult-like mentality prevalent within these organizations makes them a danger to student safety. Unless a healthy masculinity is created within fraternities, and drug and alcohol abuse are curbed then we will keep seeing cases of sexual assault and deaths.
