2019 BET Awards Honors Icons Mary J. Blige, Tyler Perry and Nipsey Hussle
The 2019 BET Awards was hosted by Regina Hall and featured spectacular performances from Cardi B, Da Baby, Lil Nas X, Meek Mill and more!
International superstar Cardi B opened the show with her husband Offset performing “Press” and “Clout.” Regina Hall then recreated moments from Beyonce’s “Homecoming” Netflix special to hype up the crowd.
Grownish star Yara Shahidi presented the Best New Artist award to Lil Baby and Da Baby brought the energy with a live performance of “Suge.” Next, Marsai Martin would win the Young Star award. Martin is the youngest executive producer in Hollywood history.
Cardi B also won the Album Of The Year award for Invasion of Privacy. Soon after, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus hit the stage for their country-trap anthem “Old Town Road.”
Young Miami held it down for City Girls by performing their summer anthem “Act Up,” and Migos made it rain with “Pure Water.” BET also honored Mary J. Blige with the Lifetime Achievement Award. She performed “No More Drama,” “I’m Going Down,” and “Real Love.” Method Man and Lil Kim even joined the festivities making this an epic musical moment.
Ella Mai won the prestigious Coca-Cola Viewers Choice Award for “Trip.” Taraji P. Henson returned to the stage to present Tyler Perry with the Icon Award. In his acceptance speech, Perry expressed the importance of following your dreams in order to help others do the same.
Kirk Franklin, Erica Campbell and Kelly Price came together for an inspirational Gospel performance. Next, rapper T.I. presented the late Nipsey Hussle’s family, including Lauren London, with the Humanitarian Award.
Closing the show Marsha Ambrosius, YG, DJ Khaled, and John Legend gave tributes to honor the life and career of Nipsey Hussle by reminding us that the marathon continues.
